East Belfast DUP Councillor Robin Newton MLA said, the attempted murder of a 39 year old man in the east of the city by a 16 year old youth again raises questions about the current knife carrying culture.

Robin Newton said, "This is another violent incident and again demonstrates the urgent need for a clamp down on both those who retail knives designed to inflict maximum injury and the young people who carry them.

"It is all too easy for a teenager to purchase a dangerous knife and the shops selling these death-inflicting weapons don’t even require a licence.

"The knife amnesty recently operated by the PSNI, welcome as it was,    now needs to be backed up by an effective clampdown on those who carry such dangerous weapons. The amnesty is over there can be no excuses for carrying a knife and the penalties for doing so need to reflect the seriousness of the offence."
