Newton Welcomes Winter Fuel Payment Campaign

EAST Belfast DUP MLA Robin Newton has welcomed the Social Security Agency’s awareness raising campaign as they attempt to increase the numbers claiming Winter Fuel Payments. This payment could be the difference between life and death for some senior citizens; especially those who live alone. The charity, Help the Aged, said: "Many pensioners still agonise about whether or not to heat their homes in the cold weather. In the world's fourth richest country, this is simply shameful.

Robin Newton said,

“The Winter Fuel Payment is one of the most important benefits and aids in ensuring those most in need are kept warm and safe during the dark and cold winter months.  For many older people this payment is the only means by which they can pay the additional winter heating costs.

I urge all those who are aged 60 and over and who have not received the Winter Fuel Payment to make a claim by contacting the Winter Fuel Payment line on 08459 15 15 15.  Those who received the payment last year will automatically receive the payment in November or December.

This payment is available to help ease the cost burden for those who need it most. I am actively encouraging all those who believe they are entitled to the payment not to set this matter aside but to get on the phone now and ensure the money will be coming before the Christmas period.”
