Persistent Homeless Figures Intolerable

East Belfast DUP MLA Robin Newton has expressed dissatisfaction regarding the lack of progress in tackling the homeless levels in the east of the city and described the situation as intolerable.

Robin Newton said,

I an extremely worried following the release of figures from the SDLP housing Minister Margaret Ritchie MLA that prove the constant levels of homelessness and that show no signs of improving.

The Minister has released figures for the years 2005/06 = 57 offers, 2004/05 = 57 0ffers and 2003/04 = 45 offers that confirm the extent of the problem. The Castlereagh NIHE office, which also covers a part of the East Belfast constituency, made offers to 153 families over the same period. And I believe the figures are only the tip of the iceberg with many families living with relatives in overcrowded conditions. This data will strengthen the resolve of local elected representatives to seek increased investment in public sector housing.

The figures highlight the growing problem and with only 300 homes being built in East Belfast this year and 5,000 people on the waiting list the situation is reaching crisis point.

I welcome the Minister’s recent good sense statement indicating that she will operate a “radical and innovative policy.” Following this I identified 37 properties, built for the private sector but now on the market for sale, which would immediately help alleviate the problems. I would encourage the Minister to purchase these homes and by taking this type of fast track action give the 5000 currently without hope some hope of getting a roof over their heads.”
