Robin Newton East Belfast Councillor and MLA said it is depressing that the City Hall Christmas tree switching on ceremony cannot go ahead without young mindless thugs creating havoc in the city centre.

Robin Newton said,

“The switching on ceremony is an event for children and young people and an opportunity for Belfast to put its best foot forward. The event is organised to send out a very positive message confirming Belfast is open for business in the run up to the festive period.

Traders and shoppers alike look forward to this time. With the continental market in full swing; the late night opening of the shops the city has an opportunity to showcase itself as an attractive shopping opportunity for both local people and bargain seekers from south of the border.

Trouble of this nature does no one any good. The young yobs that are out to have a go at each other just don’t care if innocent children are injured in the process and when caught deserve to be treated severely by the courts.”
