Robin Newton East Belfast DUP MLA said over the Christmas period, which can now be a week long, as the vast majority of people meet with family and friends to enjoy the festive holiday there will be many elderly who will spend Christmas alone.
Robin Newton said,
“As the social services close down over the Christmas holiday period or reduce services, many elderly residents who live alone and are supported by the social services throughout the year will be at risk.
The spirit that was once prevalent throughout our communities and is now largely absent was in many ways a lifeline for elderly and vulnerable people. Giving even a few supportive minutes to call with those elderly neighbours can be beneficial just showing interest and a willingness to lend a hand.
I am calling on anyone who has elderly and vulnerable neighbours to contact them for a short time to say hello, check on their well-being and prove that community spirit is not dead.”
