Robin Newton East Belfast DUP MLA has called on those, especially young girls, who over the Christmas festive period will be attending parties and other social events to be sure they stay safe from sex attacks.
Robin Newton said,
“As Christmas parties get into full swing and right into the New Year celebrations large amounts of alcohol are consumed the potential for sexual assaults and rape increases. Young girls especially can become very vulnerable and they need to plan how they can stay safe. A significant number of rape cases involve excessive amounts of alcohol whether consumed by the helpless victim or the reprobate sex attacker.
I would urge all young women to ensure the taxi they use is licensed to operate as a taxi and any licensed driver will happily provide proof. Safety is paramount to a good night out and I wish everyone a pleasant and safe festive period.
I actively encourage everyone to have an enjoyable Christmas holiday, but also a time to remain vigilant. It is essential girls in particular remain in groups and ensure they all get home safely. ”
