East Belfast DUP MLA's, Robin Newton and Lord Browne of Belmont, have voiced their concern at the potential closure of up to six of the eight libraries in the East Belfast constituency, under plans recommended by Libraries NI.
Robin Newton said,
"East Belfast has a total of eight libraries within the constituency and the closure of up to six of these valable services will have a detrimental effect on the whole constituency. To recommend over half of the libraries in the constituency for closure will have a damaging impact on the potential of many people in the area."
Lord Browne of Belmont added,
"To say there is a need to close over half of the libraries of East Belfast is illogical. Many of these libraries have high membership numbers and are used regularly. They are an assey for the community, with membership ranging from students who use them for research into school and university work, to those who wish to borrow books for a recreational purpose. Libraries are also a valuable access point to the internet for those unable to access the internet at home.
I acknowledge that some of the libraries have fallen into a state of disrepair and also suffer from falling membership; however, I do not believe that the majority of libraries in the constituency should be closed. As a member of the Culture, Arts and Leisure Committee, I plan on raising my concerns with Libraries NI in the near future."
East Belfast Should Not Unduely Suffer From Library Closures
