East Belfast DUP MLA Robin Newton has said the selection of County Armagh TUV man David Vance to fight the coming Westminster General Election for East Belfast shows Jim Allister’s difficulties in finding candidates.
Robin Newton said,
“The selection of touring candidate David Vance to run in East Belfast for the coming Westminster election does not come as a surprise. Vance’s commitment to East Belfast however must be questioned. His political track record shows his electoral priority was Craigavon Council where he was rejected by the electorate in 2001. Having been rejected by those who live closest to him in Craigavon, Mr. Vance seeks a mandate on the TUV ticket of collapsing Stormont and returning to Direct Rule, in a constituency where he is unknown.
People in East Belfast will expect more from an MP than ranting attacks on other Unionists. That Jim Allister had to draft in a candidate from miles away to stand in East Belfast shows the appalling lack of talent inside the TUV. I am confident the people of East Belfast will not support the unrealistic and backward facing politics of the TUV.”
