ROBIN Newton East Belfast DUP MLA said the news regarding the trading difficulties of electrical retailer is a further warning sign about our still very difficult economic circumstances.

Robin Newton said,

“The appointment of an administrator confirms the very difficult business circumstances of Laser within this highly competitive sector of retailing.

The increasing ease of doing business over the internet creates a very challenging and competitive white goods market. Increasingly the consumer is buying at very cut-throat prices with delivery to the door from the comfort of an armchair and at the click of a button.

Those multiple high street or shopping centre based retailers; with their showroom overheads will increasingly find it difficult to be competitive.

The Laser difficulties are a further blow to the Northern Ireland economy. The 140 jobs on the line are people with families and/or responsibilities and they will be concerned over the Easter holiday period. It is to be hoped that a buyer can be found and a rescue package put together.”
