ROBIN Newton East Belfast DUP MLA said the long-awaited decision on the libraries closure plan by LibrariesNI can be viewed as both a victory and a defeat.

Robin Newton said,

“The plan to close these vital services in the east of the city was resisted by substantial numbers in the community. I want to offer thanks and congratulations to Stephen Crosby, Chairperson of East Belfast’s Wandsworth Community Association, who successfully lobbied Libraries NI to reverse their intention to close Ballyhackamore and Tullycarnet libraries.

Local residents were able to voice their concerns through a public meeting and with cross party support from local politicians the Community Association submitted the feedback and offered positive proposals to ensure that these important services are allowed to develop in the future. It is hoped that Libraries Ni will consolidate their investment in East Belfast by refurbishing and replenishing the stock of new books and services available at these locations.

The retention of the Woodstock Library is a welcome decision for all those who attended the public meetings and lobbied against the closure of this important and well used local facility.”
