ROBIN Newton East Belfast DUP MLA said the special recognition award to Belfast Territorial Army soldier sergeant Andy Nutt by the US Marine Corps is recognition for a difficult job done to the highest professional standards.
Robin Newton said,
“The people of Belfast can take pride in this special award to Sergeant Andy Nutt and there will be many who owe a great debt of gratitude to him for his humanitarian type work.
This generous recognition from the US Marine Corps to one of our soldiers stands in stark contrast to the mean spirited attitude of some Belfast City Council politicians.
When requested by the Ministry of Defence to acknowledge the sacrifices of our troops in Afghanistan by flying the Armed Forces Flag for a six day period an Alliance, Sinn Fein and SDLP coalition voted down the request. It is not too difficult comprehend the attitude of Sinn Fein and the SDLP. However, having voted down the MoDs request the Alliance Party’s shameful approach in agreeing one day to fly the flag is mind boggling. If the MoD had wanted only one day they would have made that request.
In failing to openly, generously and appropiately show gratitude to our service men and women Alliance’s Lord Mayor Naomi Long stands in stark contrast to very generous stance of the US Marine Corps in honouring duty, professionalism and sacrifice.”
