Robin Newton East Belfast DUP MLA has paid tribute to all those groups and individuals who provided support within the Royal British Legion initiative Friends of the Forces 2010 and received an award for their sterling work. (News Letter Sat 12 June)

Robin Newton said,

“It is however offensive to many that the awards were presented by Cllr Naomi Long MP, MLA. In Belfast City Council she voted against supporting the armed forces by flying the Armed Forces Flag for a period of six days this month. The request from the Ministry of Defence was rejected by a coalition of the Alliance Party, Sinn Fein and SDLP.  Servicemen and women who on our behalf daily put their lives in danger deserve our full support and gratitude rather than some small token gesture.

To snub the MoD and then turn-up at an important ceremony to present awards to fund raisers and supporters of the armed services demonstrates total hypocrisy. This lack of sincerity and duplicity from the Alliance Party confirms them to be  deficient in  political principle. It is obvious attending the awards ceremony is undertaken only for publicity rather than full respect for those serve within the armed forces.”
