ROBIN Newton East Belfast DUP MLA has praised the peaceful Somme Memorial Parade held in East Belfast on 1st July.

Robin Newton said,

“The annual Somme Parade on July 1st is a special event in the year for the Orange Order’s Ballymacarrett District No 6. It is a Parade which remembers the brave men of the 36th Ulster Division who fought and died for our freedoms at the Battle of the Somme.

It is also an opportunity for the people of East Belfast to remember that many of those who gave their life at the Somme were members of the Orange Order from throughout Northern Ireland.

The Parade was well organised, peaceful and dignified. The many thousands of supporters who lined the streets obviously enjoyed this very special parade.  It is appropriate to acknowledge the hard work of the members of Ballymacarrett District No 6, the Police and the interface Community Groups that ensure the Parade passes off peacefully.

The Ulster men who made the ultimate sacrifice at the Somme were once again remembered. This parade is a fitting tribute in their honour and a truly wonderful night enjoyed by Orange Order brethren and their supporters.”
