Robin Newton East Belfast DUP MLA said it is a sad day when in the mother of parliaments political dogma has a higher precedence than the education of children. The Government in announcing cutbacks in school building provision when simultaneously allocating £ millions to a referendum on the electoral process will be seen by many parents, principals and pupils as shameful. The Alliance Party and the Ulster Unionists, being in a political relationship with the Government coalition parties, need to clarify their position on this matter.
Robin Newton said,
“This Government decision to hold a referendum on how MPs are elected is a high-priced sop to the Liberal Democrats. This political bribe is the price the Conservatives must pay for support from the Lib Dems. It comes at a time when everyone is being asked to tighten their belts and will be viewed as costly Lib-Dem puppet like political string-pulling.
The reform of the electoral process does not figure on the radar of the electorate. There is no lobby from the woman or man-in-the-street to cast their votes in a different way. Nobody discusses in the pub, the works canteen or at the dinner table this supposed burning issue of electoral reform; it exists only in the psyche of woolly minded Lib-Dem politicians. But there is huge concern about education, jobs, housing and the cost of living. These senior politicians need to get real and rather than indulging their political whims start addressing the voters concerns.”
