ROBIN Newton East Belfast DUP MLA and the Dup Group on Belfast City Council today expressed his disappointment at the Lord Mayor’s decision not to attend the Council’s annual act of remembrance at the Cenotaph in Belfast.

Robin Newton said, on behalf of the DUP group;

“The Lord Mayor’s decision not to attend the Council’s official act of remembrance is disappointing, but sadly is not unexpected.

At a time when so many families from right across Belfast have sons and daughters serving in conflicts around the world, and at a time when war memorials across the UK have been vandalised with memorial metal plates removed to sell as scrap, it is vital that the entire community unites to support these acts of remembrance.

Sinn Fein need to show that they have grown up and that they can stand side by side with unionists in remembering those, Protestants, Roman Catholics and other religions from all sections of the community, who gave their lives fighting against fascism.

It is a great setback that Sinn Fein, and in particular the Lord Mayor, does not wish to be part of moving Northern Ireland forward to a place where remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice is not a political issue.”
