ROBIN Newton East Belfast DUP MLA. has welcomed confirmation from the Minister for Health Edwin Poots.MLA on plans for the redevelopment of the former Joss Cardwell Centre site.
Robin Newton said,
“The now vacant Joss Cardwell Centre situated on the corner of the Holywood Road and Circular Road has been unoccupied for a number of years. The site is very visible to passers-by and is close to homes on the Circular Road. It is also a highly valuable site but has become overgrown and suffered a degree of vandalism. This site is too valuable an asset to be left vacant and serving no purpose.
I therefore approve of the Minister’s current plans to re-use the site for two four bedded respite and shared care units for ill children. The business case for this use is currently being considered by the Department and a decision is expected in the near future. This use is in line with the previous purpose of the building in supporting those in need of specialist medical care.
If the Minister’s business case is proven favourable and he can find the money for this worthwhile project the redevelopment of the site will make a big improvement in tidying up the area. This will be a win-win situation; for residents and ill children and their parents.”
