ROBIN Newton East Belfast DUP Councillor and MLA. has slammed those young vandals who are damaging fire hydrants around Belfast and described their actions as being foolish and irresponsible.
Robin Newton said,
“I can well understand the frustration of Northern Ireland Water (NIW) staff as they are called to deal with this senseless abuse of the fire hydrants.
This is not a new occurrence; there is history of this happening during good weather in parts of the City. It is shameful that as areas of the UK and different countries cry out for a constant supply of water irresponsible individuals in Belfast waste this precious resource.
In appreciating the irritation of NIW staff this problem cannot be allowed to continue. If the vandals, as suspected, are using NIW keys to turn on the water and cause water loss then some form of security measure must be undertaken to prevent this happening.
Lives are put at risk with this vandalism, PSNI time is wasted in supporting NIW staff as they do their repair duty and residents suffer disrupted water supplies. Given the cost to the taxpayer this is a problem to which a solution must be found.”
Hydrant Abuse Must Be Halted
