Animal Cruelty A Shame On Society

East Belfast MLA Robin Newton said the list of almost 200 animal cruelty charges outlined in today’s Belfast Magistrates court is shameful and hard to believe in today’s society.

Speaking today the DUP representative said,

“It is hard to believe list of sickening animal cruelty charges which are being prosecuted at Belfast Magistrates Court today. The charges investigated by USPCA Inspectors and the PSNI are stomach-churning and remind us that there are some people in society prepared to inflict such awful suffering on animals.

The use of dogs in badger baiting and dog fighting is a shocking activity that gives twisted pleasure. Not only do the badgers suffer horrifically until their death but the dogs get severe injuries and cannot be taken for treatment by a vet for fear of being reported. The dogs endure great pain, have their jaws torn and their eyes damaged and receive only minimal attention by the owners.

I find it shocking that anyone would go into the countryside with dogs with their only intention being to cause suffering and unimaginable pain on animals for their own perverted pleasure. It is hard to believe that some people would be willing to allow dog fights that cause such dreadful pain and suffering to their animals.

I offer congratulations to the USPCA and the PSNI for their work combatting such horrific crimes and bringing anyone responsible before the courts.”
