Robin Newton East Belfast DUP MLA has welcomed the decision of the Assembly's Executive to invest in a new police college on the East Belfast Garnerville site.

Robin Newton said,

"The decision has been long awaited. The training and retraining of our  police officers is being carried out in facilities no longer suitable for modern day policing.

The £30M investment in a brand spanking new facility, within the boundaries of the existing Garnerville site, will provide the necessary up-to-date buildings that will match the high standard of the PSNI recruit training programme. PSNI training is assessed as a Level 5 qualification, the highest police training standard within the UK.

This decision will also allow those living locally and working on the site and providing a service to the PSNI to remain in employment. The investment will provide work for the NI construction sector and the many local firms that provide goods and services to the existing college will welcome the opportunity to continue the business relationship.

This investment is a Christmas good news story and a great way to start the New Year."
